Yesterday was our first official field trip day or “Tent Day” as they are known around here. Guest writer Hope Logan will share share her impressions of our trip to Popham Beach State Park for Tent Day. Enjoy! “The Wallace dining hall hummed with the sound of clattering forks as campers fueled up on Rice Krispies, bananas, fried eggs, and cheesy biscuits. By the time the second course was served the overcast sky had burned off for a mostly sunny day of adventures along the Maine coast. After a sunscreen session on the quad those campers heading for the beach boarded buses to Popham State Beach Park. At the beach, the wind was roaring and the waves crashed against the shore. Surfers caught waves, seagulls rode the winds, and lighthouses dotted the nearby islands. While at the beach, many campers took time to themselves amidst a field of towels to pour over their own personal reading while others made sandcastles. Some kids body-surfed in the chilly Atlantic and others shot over the waterline on skim boards. A fast paced game of soccer took place in the sand where everyone from counselors to Puffins scored a goal. The day warmed up in time for lunch and the tide fell enough for many campers to walk across the exposed wet sand out to rocky Fox Island just next to the beach. Once there, campers experienced the surf crashing against craggy rocks in true Maine coastal style. The buses were loaded in the afternoon sun with tired and salty campers eager to return to camp for the slip and slide (a classic tarp and hose configuration) on the lower field. Our first Tent Day brought a taste of the beauty Maine has to offer and all the splendor of the New England shore.” – Hope Logan See more photos of tent day here!
