We’re thrilled to welcome Mateus Da Costa back to Camp Chewonki. Mateus was last with us in the summer of 2013 as our Papa Osprey. For summer 2017, he will be our Cabin Wilderness Trip Coordinator. In this role, Mateus will help our campers and counselors prepare for their cabin wilderness trip.
Whether on the coast or in the inland lakes, rivers and mountains of Maine, Chewonki has a wonderful tradition of wilderness travel with our campers. The logistics and details for preparation are significant, and Mateus will help coordinate these details to ensure a positive experience. From helping to pack food and equipment to teaching the needed outdoor skills such as canoe paddling, Mateus brings significant experience with Chewonki, providing an understanding of what it takes to make for a positive wilderness trip experience.
Mateus will also help to publicize the trips with the rest of the camp community, raising the profile of what our campers do when they are away from Chewonki. Mateus’s most recent role with Chewonki includes time this past academic year with our Maine Coast Semester program, helping teach our residential cohort of high school juniors gain the skills needed to thrive and succeed in any outdoor setting. Mateus was influential in teaching outdoor skills such as, wilderness-leadership, cross country skiing, tarp camping, and flat-water canoeing.
According to Mateus, he is most excited about “rejoining our amazing summer camp community and the opportunity of interacting with all of our boys campers, counselors, and trip leaders in order to ensure our campers have the most positive wilderness trip experience this summer.” We look forward to Mateus’s trademark high energy and positive attitude as he helps our campers prepare for their wilderness trips.
