We continue to enjoy the many gifts of August on the Maine Coast. Wow, the weather has been beautiful, and our camp community continues to grow closer and stronger. No one wants this to end next Monday, August 15th! We’re making the most of every opportunity in the meantime. We had our first “Boat Day” on Friday and Saturday. On Friday afternoon, all 46 Owls got in a boat of one kind or another, followed by the entire Heron group on Saturday. The waterfront was alive with canoes, kayaks, sailboats and even stand-up paddleboards. This was a fun way to introduce an entire age group to the joys of boating. It was a treat for me watching campers explore the interactions between boat, paddle and water as their confidence grew with each passing dip of the paddle. Sailors experienced the thrill of moving while under sail. One veteran counselor remarked to me that he had never seen so many kids having so much fun in so many boats at our waterfront. Weather conditions did present some challenges each day. The heavy winds on Friday meant we needed to stop sailing a bit earlier, and impending thunder showers on Saturday ended the entire boat day a little sooner than planned, but we still accomplished our goal of introducing more campers to boats. Many of you may be familiar with our long tradition of music here at Chewonki. Our 7-week campers in Fo’c’s’le wrote and performed their own song at last Saturday’s campfire about their experiences at Chewonki. The entire camp was overwhelmed by their song. The bonds formed between these campers over the last 6 weeks is very strong as shown by the song they wrote. Perhaps you will have a chance to hear it performed in the weeks to come. Enjoy!
