July 6th, 2010 What a great morning bird walk we had! 20 species and more than 40 birds. Our highlight was a beautiful male Scarlet tanager! We first heard it singing in the trees above the shop and spent considerable time trying to pick this mystery bird out of the foliage. Despite the bright red plumage these birds are often high up and well hidden in the trees, much harder to find than one would think. We were all pretty excited since this was a first for this year! Other highlights included a flock of Cedar waxwings taking advantage of the ripening black cherries along the road. Several boys have earned their “bird buddy bands” for coming on 3 bird walks, and some are working on their second band! We’ll be banding next on Friday.
