The Ospreys are the oldest camper group and have completed grades 8 or 9. The leaders of the camp community learn to accept more responsibility for defining camp culture, providing mentorship to younger campers and taking a greater interest in their own development and the stewardship of the world around them.
Ospreys enrolled in the three-week session spend eight or nine days on the trail – canoeing, hiking, or sea kayaking. No previous experience is required. Seven-week Ospreys will embark on three unique wilderness trips that develop their skills across a variety of trip disciplines. The Osprey program prepares campers to participate in our 3- and 5-week wilderness trips and, eventually, take part in our counselor-in-training program.
Programs for Ospreys:
Our Osprey program combines a residential camp experience with extensive wilderness adventuring. While at camp between canoe, kayak, and hiking trips, Ospreys participate in experiences designed especially for them as well as the many activities enjoyed by the camp as a whole, including sailing, swimming, nature, archery, sustainability, pottery, farm, and many others.
Osprey Canoeing, Hiking, and Kayaking Trips for 3-Week Campers
Ospreys enrolled in the three-and-a-half-week session will go on a week-long canoeing, hiking, whitewater kayaking, or sea kayaking trip. No previous experience is required.
The Osprey Expedition for 7-Week Campers:
The Osprey Expedition offers an exciting opportunity for qualified Ospreys to engage in camp life and “bridge” to a longer, more challenging wilderness trip. During the first part of their seven weeks experience, they will work on developing technical paddling skills at Chewonki’s Big Eddy campus on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. As a culminating experience, Ospreys will paddle a remote river and test their new paddling skills against stretches of class II & III whitewater.
This 7-week program is designed to be the perfect testing grounds for new skills, experience unparalleled beauty, and discover the fun of remote wilderness travel.
