At Chewonki, we organize our campers into age groups called Puffins, Owls, Herons, and Ospreys. The Herons are the second-oldest group at camp. They are learning to be leaders in the camp community.
Programs for Herons:
Chewonki provides Herons with an array of age-appropriate, traditional camp activities and personal and group challenges to choose from. These boys discover new interests and deepen their skills in activities they already enjoy. Many have established friendships from previous summers at Chewonki; all are eager to meet new boys and expand their circle of friends. Herons are ready to take on the world.
Herons live in simple cabins with other Herons and two counselors. They participate in the full range of opportunities Chewonki offers, enjoying outdoor and indoor activities including kayaking, woodworking, photography, nature, farm, tennis, pottery, and lots more. Adventure Trips for Herons:
Herons embark on a six-day wilderness trip during their session, discovering an unspoiled part of Maine on foot and/or by canoe or kayak. These adventures give campers a chance to become responsible wilderness travelers and students of the natural world. The boys often form close bonds with their fellow campers on these trips–and memories that last a lifetime
Campers enrolled for seven weeks who display particular interest in and preparedness for a specific wilderness activity may be invited on an additional, more challenging trip.
